Following the instructions of the brand's founder Max Büsser to create the "greatest and wildest three-axis tourbillon of all time", master watchmaker Eric Coudray (a name indelibly associated with the rise of the multi-axis tourbillon in the new millennium) got to work. In the Legacy Machine Thunderdome, the three-axis rotary escapement combines the characteristics of both systems. The energy is delivered to the rotating cage via a two-speed split transmission operating according to the karrusel principle. However, the innermost cage is best described as a tourbillon, as it has a fixed wheel.

Then again, there are fixed wheels, and there are fixed wheels for the LM Thunderdome. Unlike a traditional tourbillon, where the escape wheel revolves around a fixed wheel, the escape wheel of the LM Thunderdome is a fixed wheel. Reversing the escapement’s geometry allows for greater balance, giving the watch a greater potential for timekeeping performance. Complementing this is unprecedented hemispherical balance - which some might mistake at first for part of a spinning cage, but don't be fooled. In a given space of the LM Thunderdome, the difference between having a flat balance and a hemispherical balance is mass. That said, it's a matter of balancing inertia.
